Glenfarclas - The Family Casks
At the 3rd Vienna Whisky Fair Ian McWilliam informed us about a new extraordinary series: “The Family Casks“. 43 vintage dated Single Cask Highland Malt Scotch Whiskies from the years 1952 to 1994 which were put on the market on that same day by the – still family-run – distillery. Such an edition is only possible if the warehouses are full like at Glenfarclas where currently 52.000 casks are maturing (mostly) undisturbed. The ceremonial presentation of this collection was held on September 13th 2007 in the rooms of “The Caledonian Club” in London.
A typical feature of Glenfarclas is the strong sherry cask influence which is easily detectable in the Family Cask Selection and quite unique. As John L.S. Grant, chairman and fifth generation owner elaborated, “Good wood is vital in maturation and the resulting richness and sweetness from sherry casks is delightful.” Glenfarclas was also a trailblazer in terms of cask strength whisky: in 1968, the first such malt, the Glenfarclas 105 was bottled at 60%. Therefore it is not unusual that all casks of the Family Cask Series were bottled at cask strength, varying from 46% (Cask No. 4913 from 1961) to 65.1% (Cask No. 1316 from 1968).
